It was in the aftermath of the 2020 summer bushfires in Australia that soprano Ayse Goknur Shanala rang me from Cyprus to suggest I compose a work about climate change, a subject of concern for me. Â My research for lyrics did not elicit anything I considered suitable, so I turned to Derek Dowding, a local poet, singer, actor, raconteur, and a person vitally interested in the future of humanity and of the planet.Derek and I had worked together before â€“ he brilliantly performed the role of Abelard in the workshopping and concert performances of my hybrid opera â€œAbelard and Heloiseâ€, which, in 1997, won the supreme CONDA (City of Newcastle Drama Award) Â for â€˜Outstanding Achievement in Newcastle Theatreâ€™ against some 200 other stage productions in Newcastleâ€™s bi-centenary year.Derek worked long and late on the lyrics for the work, producing an emotional document covering history, cause and effect. Â His words produced musical responses from me which I consider react appropriately to both his words and the subject matter. I hope our listeners will agree.For the musical treatment I had to consider that the length of the work, through-sung, 20+ minutes, required a recurrent grounding to avoid too many thematic ideas getting in the way of the words. Â To that end, I created a quasi-reflective section which appears, rondo-style, quite a few times during the length of the piece. Â And, for further cohesion, I built an ABA (ternary) section early to address certain word structures. Â Mostly, the various sections followed the stanza structure provided by Derek, with some combinations. Â My musical style is essentially melodic, but with dramatic and other episodes, be they tonal, astringent, harmonically indecisive and so on. Â In building the work I was principally influenced by the impact and flow of the words.The work is quite mammoth for both the singer and the pianist. We have been frequent collaborators since 2011, when he premiered the complete set of my Three Settings of W. B. Yeats for string quartet and tenor. At his urging, I transcribed and published my Three Poems of Christina Rossetti (originally for medium voice) for high voice, which he premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory in 2014. American Death Ballads was premiered by him at the San Francisco Conservatory, November 1, 2015, with pianist John Churchwell, and at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Conference in Chicago, July 10, 2016, with pianist Warren Jones.The choice of texts for my American Death Ballads was inspired partly by Coplandâ€™s Old American Songs, which I deeply admire, but more by my dear friend and colleague the late Conrad Susaâ€™s Two Murder Ballads. The ingenuity of Susaâ€™s accompaniments for his ballads in imagining anew the original source material owes a great deal to Coplandâ€™s accompaniment for his songs. Though the content of my songs is completely original and not based on preexisting melodies, I have tried to expand on this further, as the texts are much longer, and go through many different moods and characters. The four texts I chose include stories about murder, death, and dying. Though two of the texts were written in England, they traveled to the colonies almost immediately. The subjects of the texts had spent time in America, and their stories were well known to Americans.Wicked Polly is a cautionary tale. Polly has lived a dissolute and immoral life, saying, 'I'll turn to God when I grow old.' Suddenly taken ill, she realizes that it is too late to repent. She dies in agony and is presumably sent to hell; young people are advised to heed. My musical setting is stately and preacherly in character for the narrator; for Polly it becomes pleading and remorseful. The Unquiet Grave was brought to the attention of Alan Lomax, the great American field collector of folk music, by English folk singer Shirley Collins. The text is taken from an English folk song dating from 1400. In The Unquiet Grave, a young man mourns his dead lover too fervently and prevents her from obtaining peace. The dead woman complains that his weeping is keeping her from peaceful rest. He begs a kiss; she tells him it would kill him. When he persists, wanting to join her in death, she explains that once they were both dead their hearts would simply decay, and that he should enjoy life while he has it. My setting is in a flowing Andante with a rocking accompaniment. Three voices are delineated here: the narrator, the mournful lover, and the dead lover speaking from the grave. The Dying Californian first appeared in the New England Diadem in 1854. Its lyrics are based on a letter from a New Englanderâ€™s sailor to his brother who is dying at sea while on the way to California to seek his fortune in the California gold fields. He implores his brother to impart his message to his father, mother, wife, and children. My setting opens with the singer alone in a moderate dirge tempo, then, joined by the piano, moves through many tonalities and moods before ending with supreme confidence as the speaker 'gained a port called Heaven/Where the gold will never rust.'Captain Kidd was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy and murder in 1701. The American connection to this ballad is that Kidd escaped to America and for a time lived in New York and Boston, though he was a wanted criminal by the British authorities and was extradited to Britain, where he was hung at 'Executionerâ€™s Dock.' The lyric was printed in Britain in 1701, traveling to the colonies almost immediately. Though the didactic tone of the text is similar to Wicked Polly, it expresses no regret until the final lines: 'Take warning now by me, and shun bad company, / Lest you come to hell with me, for I must die.' My setting is fast and spirited, expressing the confidence of a man who lived life as he wanted. -David Conte.

Each song has a unique matrix, each of which is also included in this collection. In the words of the composer, each song is meant to focus more on the individual words that make up the poem that is supported by the music. This oddly fun collection is perfect for any recital or performance that has a contemporary or modern theme.The Letter is about the singer's feelings for someone, manifesting in them speaking about what they have written for them. Each phrase becomes a little more unraveled, exhibiting the singer's mental unraveling.

The music and text of â€˜The Sense of a Place Will Remainâ€™ was inspired by pictures of an early carved stone cross and a tenth-century Viking burial stone on the island of Inchcolm in Scotland. First performed by Inchcolm New Music Ensemble 29 June 2007, conductor Steve King. Instrumentation is flexible; the following is a guide: Part 1 - Violin 1, flute 1 (doubling piccolo if possible) oboe 1, Part 2 - Violin 2, flute 2, oboe 2 (doubling tenor recorder if possible), clarinet 1, trumpet Part 3 - Viola, clarinet 2, horn in F, Eb horn (2 players doubling harmonicas in C) Part 4 - Cello, bassoon Part 5 - Double bass, bass guitar (or Cello 2 - playing as if usual bass clef, but an octave lower where possible) SATB voices (doubling metal spoons and pitch pipes) Optional:Percussion (one player) - claves, glockenspiel (could be a childâ€™s toy instrument such as an â€˜Angelâ€™ glockenspiel), mark tree, spring drum (thunder shaker), frame drum, musical jewelry box (or similar clockwork device).Should a glockenspiel not be available, a special part has been created which arranges the glockenspiel for two flutes, together with the other percussion music. This special part is not visible in the score. Keyboard instrument with sustaining capability - piano sound Instructions: Wind players can breathe ad lib. during any very long notes. From letter D onwards non-wind players who are not soloists blow across the top of small bottles. The pitches produced are not specified, but they should not be shrill. A soft breathy tone is preferred. About half of the voices play pairs of metal spoons (share printed part between two singers and anyone not holding the music holds metal spoons). Hold the spoons one in each hand, and strike the larger ends together. Spoons are struck together where shown with a large patterned note head. Strike rapidly where a tremolo sign is given. Four singers play pitch tuning pipes: 1 Soprano and 1 Alto play viola/cello pitch tuning pipes, 1 Tenor and 1 Bass play violin pitch tuning pipes Pitch pipe playing is indicated with square note heads - player should breathe ad lib. during very long notes. Where there are very long sung notes, the singers may stagger breathing ad lib. Spoken sounds are indicated with x note heads and with the text in italics. There are many pauses. These can be of varying duration, but on the whole they should not hold up the momentum of the piece, but be of sufficient duration to establish the solo and pitch pipe notes. Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1427). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.In the symphony popularly known as the Pastoral, Beethoven delineates his deep love for nature, for the peace of the countryside along with the drama of a thunderstorm. Little could he know how industrialism, urbanisation, exploitation and a general lack of respect would come to be a threat to Mother Earth. When we hear the nightingale, the cuckoo, and the rumbling of thunder in Beethoven's sixth symphony, the aim of the composer is to express his emotions with regard to these sounds of nature rather than imitate them (Mehr Empfindung als Malerei!). Yet the Pastoral Symphony became a model for 19th century programme music composers who wished to renew the symphonic format with storytelling and a freer artistic idiom. The vocal work Det forlorade paradiset (The lost paradise) makes reference to Beethoven's ontologically anchored love for Creation, but also to the fundamental tension between the idyllic and encroaching threats, the very factors that give the Pastoral Symphony its richness and inevitability. The lyrics have nothing to do with John Milton's famous epos Paradise Lost, they foretell an approaching apocalypse created by mankind in this age of pollution and climate change. The choral text consists of fragments of Schiller's Ode an die Freude (used by LvB in his 9th Symphony). A few quotes by Beethoven will be recited as well.The basic principal of this composition is to present soothing parallel - tonally based - streams of nature sounds and idyllic surroundings with the gathering of ominous clouds of approaching disaster: ferocious fires, torrents of rain and stormy winds (where the singers make use of clusters, chanting, growl, stamping their feet, etc). Doch mehr Empfindung als Malerei! (emotion rather than mere imitation). A nod or two to Mr. Beethoven by way of droning and using chromatic runs.
